John 8:7 When they persisted in asking him questions, he straightened up and said, “The person who is sinless should be the first to throw a stone at her.”
In this verse Jesus is exposing the hypocrisy of the accusers. He is not excusing sin—He is revealing that no one there was morally qualified to condemn, because every one of them was guilty before God. His statement forces them to examine their own hearts before judging someone else.
Jesus confronted their motives. The scribes and Pharisees weren’t seeking justice. They were trying to trap Jesus (John 8:6). Their hearts were full of malice, not righteousness.
He exposed their hypocrisy. They acted like they were defenders of the Law, but:
They ignored the man who was involved in the adultery (both were supposed to be judged, Deut. 22:22).
They violated due process.
They used the woman as bait to attack Jesus.
Jesus’ words forced them to look inward:
“If you want to judge her by the Law, judge yourself by the same standard.”
He reminded them of universal guilt. No human being is sinless.
Romans 3:23 confirms: “All have sinned…” Jesus wasn’t saying: “Sin doesn’t matter,”
but rather, “You are not qualified to condemn her as if you are righteous.”
Jesus upheld the Law while revealing grace. The Law required righteous witnesses. Jesus’ statement made every accuser disqualify himself.
They dropped their stones because:
They knew they were guilty.
They knew they were not righteous judges.
They knew Jesus had exposed their hearts.
Jesus shifted the focus from outward sin to inward sin. The Pharisees saw her sin.
Jesus made them see their own sin. This is the heart of the passage:
Before you condemn someone else’s sin, deal honestly with your own.
Jesus gives the requirements for being a judge, which is something for all of us to hear. We have the right to be the judge of others provided we meet the requirement. That requirement is sinlessness. May I say to you, my friend, I don’t know about you, but that takes me out of the stone–throwing business.
TOO MANY PEOPLE THAT ARE CONSTANTLY JUDGING OTHERS NEED TO DISQUALIFY THEMSELVES, BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT IN POSITION TO JUDGE ANYONE.
CHECK YOURSELF BEFORE YOU JUDGE SOMEONE ELSE.
