Psalm 37:4 Take delight in the LORD, and He will give you your heart’s desires.
To take delight in God means to find your deepest joy, satisfaction, and pleasure in who God is—His presence, His character, His love, His ways, and His will.
It’s not just enjoying His blessings; it’s enjoying Him.
This is a verse that is often partially quoted. You’ll hear people say that God will give you the desires of your heart. That sounds great! Everyone wants to have his or her desires fulfilled. If this is the only thing a person reads out of the verse, they are missing the point. The crux of this verse is that it is not two separate pieces of wisdom, but an “if/then” statement. If you take delight in the Lord, then He will grant the desires of your heart, because if you are truly delighted in Him, then the desires of your heart will align with His will. This verse is not promising that whatever a person’s desires are, God will fulfill them; it is promising that if you line your will up with God’s, then your desires will always be fulfilled, because God’s will is always fulfilled. If this verse is an instruction (which the chapter header clearly says it is), then it’s the guidance that is the focus, not the result.
When you find your delight in someone, your desires begin to line up with theirs. You find joy in their happiness and frustration in their agitation. When you delight in God your desires begin to line up with His. Your deepest yearning is for His will to be fulfilled. This verse is an important one for us to keep in our hearts because it reminds us that life is not about God following our plan, or giving us what we want. It is about us conforming to His will and, in that, we can find ultimate fulfillment.
