GOD SPEAKS ABOUT DISCERNMENT

GOD SPEAKS ABOUT DISCERNMENT

Discernment is the God‑given ability to see clearly, judge rightly, and distinguish truth from error, especially when the truth is not immediately obvious.
Discernment is the ability to judge well — to evaluate people, situations, teachings, and choices with clarity and accuracy.
It involves grasping what is obscure, seeing beneath surface appearances, and recognizing motives, patterns, or dangers others may miss.
It is closely related to wisdom, insight, perception, and sound judgment.
Discernment is essential in making wise decisions. James 1:5, TLB. “If you want to know what God wants you to do, ask Him, and He will gladly tell you, for He is always ready to give a bountiful supply of wisdom to all who ask Him; He will not resent it.”
Discernment comes to those who are humble. Psalms 25:9, NIV. “He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them His way.”
Why Discernment Matters in Daily Life
Discernment helps you:
Recognize godlessness, deception, or unhealthy influences.
Identify what strengthens or weakens your walk with Christ.
Make wise decisions instead of impulsive ones.
See through flattery, manipulation, or false teaching.
Understand people’s motives and situations more accurately.
Key Components of Discernment:
Seeing what is not obvious — recognizing subtle truths or hidden dangers.
Judging accurately — making correct evaluations about what is good or bad, true or false.
Understanding clearly — perceiving meaning, motives, or patterns that others overlook.
Choosing wisely — selecting what aligns with truth, righteousness, and God’s will.
Discernment is not something we manufacture — it is something God gives.
Scripture shows that discernment is received through five main channels, and each one builds on the others.
1. We Receive Discernment from the Holy Spirit
The Spirit is the source of spiritual discernment.
Without Him, we can only judge by human reasoning.
1 Corinthians 2:14 (KJV) “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God… because they are spiritually discerned.”
The Spirit: Opens your eyes, sharpens your judgment, alerts you to danger, reveals truth, and Exposes deception. Discernment begins when the Spirit gives you spiritual sensitivity.
2. We Receive Discernment Through the Word of God
The Word trains your senses to recognize truth from error.
Hebrews 5:14 (KJV) “But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age… who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”
Discernment grows when you: read Scripture consistently, apply it, compare everything to it, and when you let it correct your thinking. The more Scripture you know, the more clearly you discern.
3. We Receive Discernment Through Obedience
Discernment increases when you obey what God has already shown you.
John 7:17 (KJV) “If any man will do his will, he shall know…”
Obedience unlocks understanding. Disobedience blinds.
When you walk in the light you already have, God gives more light.
4. We Receive Discernment Through Prayer
Solomon prayed for discernment, and God granted it.
1 Kings 3:9 (KJV) “Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart… that I may discern between good and bad.” God still answers this prayer.
Ask Him daily:“Show me what I cannot see.” “Warn me when something is off.” “Give me clarity, not confusion.” Prayer opens the door for discernment to flow.
5. We Receive Discernment Through Spiritual Maturity
Discernment grows as you grow.
Philippians 1:9–10 (KJV) “That your love may abound… in knowledge and in all judgment; That ye may approve things that are excellent…”
Maturity produces: better judgment, sharper instincts, stronger convictions, faster recognition of danger, and clearer understanding of God’s will. Discernment is the fruit of a life that is growing in Christ.
