Make Way for the Righteous! Those who obey the wisdom taught in God’s Word will become more skillful in handling the affairs of life. But we must not think that this wisdom is a set of rules or a collection of “success formulas” that anyone can occasionally apply as he or she pleases. Following God’s wisdom is a full-time endeavor. His Word must first work within our hearts and transform our character before we can become the kind of people God can guide and bless. You don’t need godly character these days to be a success in making money. Many Hollywood celebrities, dishonest businessmen, and deceptive politicians have proved that. But if you’re concerned with making a life, you must major on building godly character. This explains why the words righteous and righteousness are used so often in Proverbs. Wisdom leads, “in the way of righteousness” (8:20) and, “in the way of righteousness is life” (12:28). “The prospect of the righteous is joy, but the hopes of the wicked come to nothing” (10:28, NIV). The wicked have hopes, but they’re false hopes, so it behooves us to examine our own hearts to make sure we’re among the righteous who truly have hope, and that we’re the kind of people the Lord can trust with His blessings. “PEOPLE OF GOD” The above is one of the designations by which believers are called. 1. Their Past History. “Which were not a people” (1 Peter 2:10). To remember what we were, is to make us appreciate what we are. 1 Peter 2:10 Once you were not God’s people, but now you are. Once you were not shown mercy, but now you have been shown mercy. Their Present Position. “But are now the people of God” (1 Peter 2:10). Since He owns us, we ought to own ourselves. Their Practical Conduct. The result of being separate from things that contaminate us is, God says, “I will be their God, and they shall be My people”. 2 Corinthians 6:16 Can Christ agree with the devil? Can a believer share life with an unbeliever? Can God’s temple contain false gods? Clearly, we are the temple of the living God. As God said, “I will live and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people.” Their Peculiar Designation. He calls them “a peculiar people,” or, “a people for His own possession”. We are His property, and therefore peculiar in being for Himself. Titus 2:14 He gave himself for us to set us free from every sin and to cleanse us so that we can be his special people who are enthusiastic about doing good things. 1 Peter 2:9 However, you are chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, people who belong to God. You were chosen to tell about the excellent qualities of God, who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Their Propitiating Atonement. Christ has made an atonement for the sins of the people. That atonement is full, eternal, and God-glorifying. Heb. 2:17 Therefore, he had to become like his brothers and sisters so that he could be merciful. He became like them so that he could serve as a faithful chief priest in God’s presence and make peace with God for their sins. Because Jesus experienced temptation when he suffered, he is able to help others when they are tempted. Their Promised Rest. “There remaineth a rest for the people of God” . The outlook for God’s people is blessed and bright. Heb. 4:9 Therefore, a time of eternal rest exists for God’s people. Those who entered his place of rest also rest from their work as God did from his. Their Eternal Bliss. “They shall be His people,” is the word of God’s promise. THE BIBLE TEACHES US ABOUT TONGUES: The first time tongues are mentioned in the NT they refer to known languages, Acts 2:4, 6, as they do when last mentioned, Rev. 17:15. Many believe tongues were sometimes ecstatic utterances, unintelligible until interpreted, the least of several gifts of the Spirit, 1 Cor. 12:28, 31; 14:5. Several principles for their proper control are given in 1 Cor. 14, which spiritual believers must acknowledge to be the commandments of the Lord, v.37. 1. Five words which can be understood are better than 10,000 in a tongue, v.19. 2. Two or three persons at the most are to speak at any one meeting, v.27. 3. These are to speak one at a time, v.27. 4. No one is to speak in tongues unless an interpreter is present, v.28. 5. Each speaker is to exercise control over himself to avoid confusion, vv. 32, 33. 6. Women are to keep silent in the church, vv. 34, 35. The word “unknown” found in the AV is not in the original text. It is implied in 1 Cor. 13:11; 14:20 that prophecy is more suited to mature Christians than are tongues. Prophecy is defined as speaking to men to edify, exhort, and comfort them, 14:3.
