God Speaks Through His Word (the Bible)
Primary way God speaks today.
Scripture
2 Timothy 3:16 (KJV) “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”
Hebrews 4:12 (KJV) “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword…”
Meaning: God’s Word is alive, authoritative, and His clearest voice. Anything He “speaks” to your heart will always align with Scripture.
God Speaks Through the Holy Spirit’s Inner Witness
This is God speaking to your spirit.
Scripture
Romans 8:16 (KJV) “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.”
John 16:13 (KJV) “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth…”
Meaning: The Holy Spirit communicates directly with your spirit — giving guidance, conviction, and assurance.
God Speaks Through Peace in Prayer
God often answers by giving peace or removing peace.
Scripture
Philippians 4:7 (KJV) “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Colossians 3:15 (KJV) “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts…”
Meaning: Peace acts like an umpire — confirming God’s direction.
God Speaks Through Godly Counsel
He uses mature believers to confirm His voice.
Scripture
Proverbs 11:14 (KJV) “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.”
Proverbs 15:22 (KJV) “Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.”
Meaning: God often confirms His guidance through wise, godly people.
God Speaks Through Circumstances (Open & Closed Doors)
He guides by arranging or blocking opportunities.
Scripture
Revelation 3:7–8 (KJV) “…he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth… behold, I have set before thee an open door…”
Acts 16:6–7 (KJV) “…they were forbidden of the Holy Ghost… the Spirit suffered them not.”
Meaning: The Spirit sometimes blocks a path or opens one to direct you.
God Speaks Through Conviction of Sin
The Spirit corrects us gently but firmly.
Scripture
John 16:8 (KJV) “And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.”
Hebrews 12:6 (KJV) “For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth…”
Meaning: Conviction is God’s loving voice pulling you back to Him.
God Sometimes Speaks Through Dreams or Visions
Not common, but biblical.
Scripture
Joel 2:28 (KJV) “…your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions.”
Acts 10:3 (KJV) “He saw in a vision evidently…”
Meaning: God may use dreams or visions, but they must be tested by Scripture.
How You Know It’s Really God Speaking
Scripture Tests
1 John 4:1 (KJV) “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God…”
1 Thessalonians 5:21 (KJV) “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”
Isaiah 8:20 (KJV) “To the law and to the testimony… if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.”
Meaning: God’s voice always agrees with His Word, His character, and the Spirit’s fruit.
So does God speak through our spirit?
Yes — directly and biblically.
Romans 8:16 is the clearest proof:
“The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit…”
That is God speaking inside you, not audibly, but spiritually.
