ENEMIES

ENEMIES
Believers have three great enemies: the world, the flesh, and the devil, Matt. 13:19–22; Eph. 2:2, 3; Jas. 4:1–7. Three weapons have been provided for victory, and a different member of the Trinity is available to help the Christian in each case.
The world in this usage is not the material creation, given to us richly to enjoy, 1 Tim. 6:17 , but the world of men, devoted to lust and pleasure, 1 John 2:15–17. The child of God has been given the weapon of faith so that he can overcome, 1 John 5:4, 5. God the Father has a special relationship to the world, 1 John 2:15; Jas. 4:4.
The enemy called the flesh is not the human body, but the old nature with its propensity to sin, in which dwelleth no good thing, Rom. 7:18. Walking in the Spirit is the means of victory, Gal. 5:16. God the Holy Spirit is set over against the flesh. They who are in the flesh cannot please God; they who are “in the Spirit” are not “in the flesh,” Rom. 8:8, 9.
The devil is revealed in Scripture to be a person, exceedingly wise, Ezek. 28:11–18 , the leader of the hosts of wickedness, Matt. 25:41. Christ overcame the devil by using the Word of God, Matt. 4:1–11. So may every believer, 1 John 2:14; Rev. 12:11. Christ and the devil are given a relationship in the Bible which suggests the believer’s victory is in Christ, Gen. 3:15; Zech. 3:1–5
